How to Clean Up Your Beauty Routine

After being a makeup artist for tv and commercials for years, I feel like I’ve tried my fair share of beauty products which I’ve loved, and some that I didn’t love so much. My daily beauty routine doesn’t change much anymore and I honestly love it! I read the book The Woman Code a few years ago, and after reading it, I knew I needed to clean up every kind of beauty routine that I had. If you want to read about how I cleaned up my skincare routine, check this post out!

I’m fully aware of the fact that every “clean beauty” product out there can’t be 100% clean and free of chemicals, but I’m still using the Think Dirty App to see which products are cleaner than others.

Prep & Prime

I have dry skin, especially in the winter months, so I like to use either my Counterstart Cocoboost Moisturizer or the Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum both by Beauty Counter before I put anything else on. I’ll prime my eyes with this On & On Brightening Eye Primer and I’ll set it with usually a light-colored eyeshadow.

Eye Shadow First

I always do my eyes before foundation, even on clients. It’s helpful, especially if you’re using a shadow that has a lot of fallout then when you clean it up you don’t have to worry about wiping your foundation away as well. After setting my eye primer with a light colored shadow, such as this one, I’ll use this bronzer (I use the shade Dune) to shade in my crease to create dimension.

Foundation & Concealer

I’ve been using the SkinTwin Featherweight Foundation from Beauty Counter (I wear the shade Medium 350) and I’ve noticed that when I try to switch to a different one, my skin breaks out because of the chemicals, so this one is a holy grail product for me! I do use their Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer (shade Medium), however I don’t find it has the coverage that I like so I’ll usually only use that one in the summer time. As far as the concealer that I use, it’s also from Beauty Counter, but I just found out that they’ve discontinued it due to an applicator issue, but I’ll keep you posted on when it comes back because it’s a good one! I’ll also set my makeup with a translucent powder to make sure the foundation isn’t going to move around while I finish.

Bronzer, Blush & Lips

I’m not into heavy contour, but I do hit the bottoms of my cheekbones to bring them out a bit with the same bronzer that I use for my eyes (shade Dune). I love a good cream blush, especially one that can do double duty and be used as lip balm as well. This one from Honest Beauty is my current favorite and I’m using the shade Soft Cool Pink. If I’m feeling like using a little highlighter, the Luminizing Glow Powder (shade Midnight Reflection) from Honest is great for a subtle glow.

Brows & Mascara

I’m a big fan of this brow pomade from Tarte for my brows (shade Medium Cool Brown) and I love how long wearing it is. My mascara game usually switches every 3 months, but right now I’m layering the Honest Beauty Mascara with the Tarte Surfer Curl and I feel like it gives me the right amount of volume without giving me spider lashes. If you know, you know.

Setting Spray

I always use a setting spray, even if I’m just wearing tinted moisturizer, because it’s like hair spray for your makeup. If you haven’t tried using a setting spray, try it once, and then let me know what you think! Right now I’m using the Stay Spray from Tarte.

That’s basically it for my daily beauty routine! I’ve really found that cleaning up my beauty routines has helped my skin feel and look better than ever before, and while it’s not 100% “clean”, I think a 90% is still doing alright.
